Rottweiler Breed History The history of the Rottweiler may not be as well documented as other breeds, but experts can trace the breed’s lineage back to the Roman era. Breed authorities theorize that these loyal protectors are descendants of the guard dogs Roman armies used to protect their sheep. Throughout history, Rottweilers have been recognized for their protective instincts and intelligence. Up until the mid-19th century, Rottweilers were used to guard grazing cattle and to pull and watch butcher carts. After the advent of the horse and cart, Rottweilers enjoyed a surge in popularity as police dogs, particularly in the United States. As a result, the breed was recognized by the AKC in 1931, 32 years after the founding of the first Rottweiler owners club in Germany.
